Calculation Policy
This document shows how we teach all aspects of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This will help you to understand the methods and strategies your child is taught in Maths.
Learn how we teach your children how to form the numbers 1-9
To enable the children to have a good understanding of how to form each number we teach them a rhyme to help.
1 - Down we run and 1 is done.
2 - Round and down, give it a shoe, that's the way we make a 2.
3 - Round like a bee, that's the way we make a 3.
4 - Down, over, down some more, that's the way we make a 4.
5 - Short neck, tummy fat, number 5 wears a hat.
6 - Round and down, touch the stick, that's the way we make a 6.
7 - Across the sky and down from heaven, that's the way we make a 7.
8 - Make an s, come up straight, that's the way we make an 8.
9 - Make a c give it a line, that's the way we make a 9.
Below are some ways in which you can help your children to practise forming your numbers.
- Paint them on paper.
- Make it out of play dough.
- Use water and paint brush to water paint on the wall and floor outside.
- Draw it in flour.
Maths vocabulary
As part of our maths curriculum it is important that the children understand and are able to use the different words that also mean adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. To help the children with this we have 4 different characters - Andy Addition, Susie Subtraction, Max Multiplication and Dotty Division. Below is a picture of them that you will be able to see in all classes once they have been taught about the area. Below each character are all the different words that we use for each sign.

Maths Games
Playing games with your children is a great way to practice lots of different maths skills including working logically. The below list is just a few that we would recommend, but there are many more!!!

Any card game e.g. Solitaire, go fish, top trumps
head bands (logical thinking and asking questions)
Charades (logical thinking and asking questions)
